The Department of Mechanical Engineering is a centre of expertise in teaching and research and exists within the oldest Faculty of Engineering in the United Kingdom. The University was also the first UK university to appoint a Professor of Engineering when, in 1840, Queen Victoria created the Chair of Civil Engineering and Mechanics.

The University has come a long way since then, but still maintains excellence in Research and Teaching. The website is designed to be of use to prospective students, existing students, past students, visitors to the department and members of staff.
