Birkbeck's Page

(Alan E. Birkbeck FIDiag.E)

I am an engineer and I work at the University of Glasgow in the Mechanical Engineering department. One of my main tasks is to provide technical support for Ron Thomson in theBallistic and Impact Group where we are engaged in researching into problems involving various forms of impact. I am also responsible for the organization and day to day maintenance and running of the Dartec servo-hydraulic testing machines.

Over the past several years I have found myself being increasingly involved with the students. Part of this involves giving lectures to the First Year students on the basic methods used in programming CNC machines and running the Starturn demonstration lathe that allows them to watch their programmes in operation.

Over the past several years I have been asked to reproduce Ancient and Medieval weapons and equipment some for show in the Hunterian Museum, and some for re-enactment groups, also some for experimental and forensic purposes. Also I am a member of the University Staff Landrover Club. I have also included some links for your amusement and also showing my Hobbies etc. Finally I have included a list of single author and co-author papers that have been published.

Also I enjoy blasting things on the range (more about this later).
