Garden of Gods, near Denver
From Denver we headed south towards the Garden of Gods, considered fit for
the gods. ;). Depending on your level of imagination (and beer consumption) you
can see lots of life-like figures eroded into the rocks..

Two cammels kissing (in the background):

Elephant:

Rock climbing can be done too at places, but limited to within 10 or so
metres high. With full gear (and license and fee) proper climbing can be done
to.
Mesa Verde, Colorado
This settlement most famous for its cliff dwelling has been around for a
while. It began on top of the cliff in mud shacks and eventually moved to a more
protected location (from elements and predators).

From Colorado to Utah along route 666 and south on 191 towards Monument valley.
First along the way were Natural bridges NM in
Utah:

Entering the famous Monument Valley on route 163 southbound:

No visit to that part of the world would be complete without a stop-over at Grand
Canyon NP (South rim)
Here at sunrise at Yaki point:

And at Grand viewpoint a few minutes later:

I strongly recommend a walk / jog / bus trip towards the Hermit rest. That
part of the canyon is closed to private vehicles, but buses are ample and frequent
with multiple stops. The views of the canyon really are the best there too. Can
even see Colorado rapids down below. And if u have time, several trails run from
Hermit's rest into the Canyon.
Note: The Grandview trail has been closed this summer and is likely to remain
so for a while, due to storm damage!
From Grand canyon we headed along I-40 and then along one of the
straightest roads I've driven on so far: the route 93, towards Hoover dam.

And entering Nevada and of
course the city of quick bucks, girls and glitz aplenty:

Las Vegas:
This year we stayed at Golden
Gate Hotel & Casino on Freemont street, which is about 1.5 miles from the center
of the strip. Freemont is where all began back in 1905 (yes that late!). And
this year LV celebrated its centenary. Lots of shows and happenings went on over
the weekend we stayed there on Freemont street, so it was a good choice and change
of scenery from the southern strip of last year. Of course the compulsory visit
to the Mirage was again on and again proved very profitable. ;)

BTW: The Forum at the Ceasars
palace has now opened to public. Expect lots of cheap (but
well done) Roman imitation and lots of $$$ shops.

All too soon it was time to head
towards LA for a few days on the beach before departure:

And yes, we saw the famous road
sing too:

A stop over at Calico ghost town
(well not exactly: population count as of 2005 is still 2). Did i mention back
in the old days they were doing very well... even had air conditioning
everywhere. Who could complain? (Enough said about the authenticity of the
place...)

LA was the usual hustle and bustle
of busy city life. We ventured to Hollywood (yes i know how predictable and
lame) to get our Oscars ;). Then towards Santa Monica (through countless traffic
jams) to spend a bit of time on Venice beach (this time around a whole 2
hours... a new record :) ). But eventually we settled at Redondo Beach after
coming back from the visit to Queen Mary II and the Scorpion Russian submarine.

And finally, on 29th July it was
time to return to the grind of everyday life... a quick snapshot of the beach
near LA and a long flight back to Munich and eventually home, to Ljubljana.
