Product Design Engineering

Product Design Engineering, taught jointly by the University of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art, "puts the fun and creativity into engineering". It is intended to create graduate engineering whose strengths will lie in their capability for creative synthesis between development and design management of engineering and consumer products.

The degree programme is structured to give a balance of time, over the span of the degree, in both institutions and integrates subject-based learning with project-led activities. It gives enhanced experience of providing solutions for engineering/market needs. The degree programme integrates the science of engineering - the engineering core study - with the activity of designing. This includes physiological, perceptual and cultural issues, and an understanding of the role of the engineer in society which provides a context for the detailed study.

Initially, the core engineering subjects in the degree programme are complemented by design studies providing a grounding in essential design and communication skills, the design process and creative management of project briefs. The later years of study develop and integrate the application of theory through structured projects. Additionally, students may make a foreign study tour. The relationship between the degree programme and industry is strong and students undertake an industrial placement. In the final year students propose a programme of individual product development and prototyping leading to concept and detailed design proposals.
