Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics

This degree programme benefits from a genuine collaboration between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Glasgow. It is aimed at students who wish to study for a degree which combines the breadth and wide appeal of mechanical engineering with the specialisms offered by advanced mechanical, aeronautics and aerospace subjects.

The core mechanical engineering programme in the first two years is supplemented with subjects in aerospace engineering and aerodynamics. From the third year onwards, you study a range of core mechanical engineering subjects and core aeronautics subjects, plus a choice of advanced options offered by both departments, with all design and project work closely focused on aeronautical engineering applications. Students also take part in the in-flight test course from Glasgow International Airport in a Jetstream aircraft. This degree is the only degree of its kind in Scotland which offers collaboration between Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering departments to provide a carefully integrated programme of study. Students benefit from the close ties with industry developed by both departments involved in the degree, with industrial case studies focused on the aerospace industries. The degree aims to allow students who wish to pursue a professional engineering career in mechanical engineering but who have a particular interest in aeronautical and aerospace engineering, to keep their career options wide open. Graduates will have all the engineering and transferable skills of mechanical engineers with a strong additional speciality in aeronautics. Mechanical engineering graduates are well represented in aerospace industries and this degree provides enhanced employment opportunities in this sector.
