Degree programme options

Flexibility is built into our degrees. You can:

  • transfer between degree programmes in the first two years if you change your minds
  • take a year out in industry
  • study a new language or continue an advanced language course
  • study in Europe for a year
  • tailor your project work to your interests
  • choose from a range of advanced specialist courses
  • transfer from BEng to MEng if your progress is good
  • transfer from MEng to BEng if you decide to graduate a year earlier

We aim to let you keep your options open. The MEng Fast Track degree programme, tailored for students with advanced entry qualifications, allows you to complete your MEng degree in 4 years.

Acquiring the skills

Mechanical engineering degrees at Glasgow provide you with a fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles by applying them to real engineering problems and placing them firmly within the context of engineering design. Research expertise of the academic staff provides leading edge student project opportunities, from ballistics to biotechnology, supported by state of art equipment, which creates modern and relevant study programmes. You will be equipped with all the transferable skills you need to be confident in meeting new engineering challenges. You will be a team player and an individual innovator, a good communicator and potential business manager, and have a wide knowledge of computer applications. Our degree programmes incorporate class activities, such as a teambuilding course, industrial visits and an overseas design study tour, to encourage new ways of working and interacting with your fellow students and staff.

Links with industry

The department has very close relationships with many industrial companies and all the degree programmes are supported by an Industrial Liaison Committee. Companies contribute industrial projects for students, offer vacation and year-out employment opportunities, are advisers in the evolution of our degrees and collaborate in, and finance, a wide range of advanced research projects.
